About a year ago, my friends John and Margaret Dowalo introduced me to Rhonda Hallden, an amazing woman who founded the Husky Haven in 1982 (www.huskyhavenofla.org). John and Margaret adopted their beautiful dog Duchess from here and in the process, John, who is an independent filmmaker, made a wonderful short film about it. You can check it out at www.inspiredfilmworks.com. John began making short YouTube videos of the dogs available for adoption and asked if i would join him and take still shots to go on the rescue's website. If you know me, you know i love dogs so of course i said "YES!"
This was my third trip to the rescue and we filmed and shot some beautiful dogs. There were 13 dogs who did not yet have video or pics up, and we were able to get 8 done this day. Why not all 13 you ask? Well there is a bit of work to the process. First we have to get the "set" ready. Then Rhonda starts bringing the dogs out one by one. Margaret, along with volunteer Jason, give the dog a quick brush and a quick walk or run to get him or her settled down a little. Jason and his wife Laura have 2 gorgeous Siberians, Bear and Sabrina, and drive all the way up from Oceanside to Palmdale to help out with this project! Laura has a special gift, a special way, with dogs... they all love her, and so once Margaret and Jason have the dog ready they bring it to the set and hand it over to Laura. Laura works her magic, showing the dog's personality, quirks, and temperament while trying to keep it turned towards the cameras! Not an easy feat :) Meanwhile, John is filming and i am shooting and Rhonda is doing voice over telling the dog's history and fine points and what kind of home would be best for it. It takes about 20-30 minutes per dog.
Why not just throw a picture up on the internet? Well, as of THIS moment there are 13029 dogs looking for a forever home on Petfinder.com. Breaks my heart. Our job, the 6 of us, is to make these beautiful Siberian Huskies stand out in the crowd... to show that Phoenix is a relaxed, mellow companion dog. That Logan is a goof ball with the world's longest tongue and a very mischievous gleam in his eye. Or that Samantha literally wants only to climb up in your lap and cuddle. Hopefully, i did my part. Check out the Husky Haven page here on the site and let me know!
